Looking for a fun family activity to end summer on a high note? Consider camping, especially if you’re wishing for a quick, easy escape from Seattle.

Summer is nearly over, but there’s still time to plan outdoor adventures. For families, especially those living in the Seattle area, camping presents an incredible opportunity to enjoy the season without breaking the bank. Below, we’ll explore why camping is an excellent summer activity for families and individuals and how to make the most of your camping trips.

Camping is the Essential Summer Activity for Seattle-based Families

Camping is one of the most cost-effective ways to enjoy summer. (Buy your gear once and then use it year after year!). Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a newbie, there are options to fit every budget. For those in Seattle, the proximity to a plethora of campgrounds — all within a 45-minute to 2-hour drive — means you can escape to nature without spending a fortune on travel. Check out this interactive map of all the different sites!

Additionally, camping offers many benefits, including:

1) Time Unplugged

In our tech-driven lives, finding time to disconnect is critical. Camping offers a chance to escape screens and immerse in the great outdoors. Unplugged time is invaluable for families to bond without the usual distractions.

2) 1:1 Time for Parents and Children

Camping creates a unique environment for parents and children to connect on a deeper level. With no work emails or homework assignments, everyone can focus on spending quality time together, whether setting up a tent, cooking over a campfire, or exploring the trails. (Here are some great trails and spots for those with kiddos).

3) Nature is Healing

Being in nature has numerous health benefits, from reducing stress to boosting mood and creativity. For kids, it’s a chance to engage their senses, learn about the environment, and experience the healing power of nature.

4) Fun to Go with Other Families

Camping with friends or other families can enhance the experience. Kids get playmates, and adults get to socialize, share responsibilities, and create lasting memories together.

5) Camping Creates Core Memories

Camping helps kids build core memories. The excitement of sleeping under the stars, the thrill of discovering new trails, and the joy of roasting marshmallows are experiences they’ll cherish forever.

Why Camping is Also Great for Those Without Kids

Camping isn’t just for families. Everyone can benefit from unplugging and enjoying some peace and quiet in nature. It’s a great way to relax, recharge, and escape the daily grind.

Camping can also be a social activity where you meet like-minded outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you prefer a private site or a more communal setting, there are options to suit your preference. From secluded spots to bustling campgrounds, you can choose how social or solitary you want your camping experience to be. Camping’s versatility makes it appealing for solo campers, couples, or groups.

Things to Consider Before Your Next Camping Trip

Before you pack up and head out, there are a few insider tips I’d like to share:

  • Reserve a Spot (ASAP): Campgrounds in Washington fill up quickly, so make your reservations early. (Some spots are first-come, first-served, so those willing to roll the dice can opt for these.)
  • Traffic: Weekend traffic can be brutal in the Seattle area. Consider camping midweek to avoid the rush.
  • Facilities: Check if the campground has the necessary amenities, such as indoor plumbing.
  • Types of Camping: Decide whether you want to car camp, backpack, stay in an RV, etc.
  • Water Source: Know if you need to bring your water.
  • Weather: Be prepared for cold nights, even if daytime temps are high.
  • Is it Pet-Friendly: Verify if dogs are allowed and remember an extra towel for your furry friend.

How to Camp on a Budget

Camping on a budget is entirely possible with a few smart strategies. One great way to save money is to take advantage of REI Garage Sales, where you can find quality used gear at a fraction of the cost. Additionally, borrowing gear from friends or family can significantly reduce expenses, allowing you to try different equipment without a hefty investment. When it comes to clothing, designated camping clothes, which are just older items you don’t mind getting dirty, can help you avoid spending on new outfits just for the trip.

Items to Splurge On

While saving money is important, certain items are worth the investment for a more comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. A good rain fly for your tent is essential, especially considering Washington’s unpredictable weather. Staying dry can make a significant difference in your comfort.

Investing in quality camp cookware is another smart move. Jetboil makes excellent camp cookware for campers of all types. A reliable camp stove and a good set of pots and pans mean you won’t have to rely on open fires, which can be restricted during fire bans.

Everyone wants to wake up refreshed and ready for adventure! Perhaps most essential, a good sleeping pad or mattress can transform your sleep quality.

Camping Activities for Everyone

Camping offers a wide range of activities that cater to different interests, ensuring fun for both families and solo campers. Water sports like kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and tubing are fantastic for cooling off and adding excitement to your trip. Fishing is another popular activity, but remember to get your license and check local regulations. Hiking is a great way to explore the area and appreciate the natural beauty, providing exercise and stunning views.

For those looking to relax, reading or napping in a hammock can be incredibly soothing. While hammocks can run the gamut of cost, even a modestly priced one can significantly enhance your relaxation time.

How to “hack” the campsite reservation process

It’s no secret that getting “the spot” can feel like a challenge. Many sources even offer ways to hack the Washington campsite reservation system. A few helpful things to note:

  • At Mount Rainer National Park, reservations can be made up to three months in advance. Throughout the summer, the park will release a block of reservations every day at 7 p.m.
  • Many other US parks require reservations, so here is a helpful guide.

RV Camping: Is it Worth It?

RV camping might be the way to go for those who prefer not to sleep on the ground. However, before making the investment, consider the following pros and cons.

Pros:

  • Convenient with amenities like showers and bathrooms
  • Weather-resistant
  • Easier with kids

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Requires storage space
  • It needs a vehicle to tow; it can be difficult to park
  • Insurance and maintenance costs
  • Less of a “nature” experience

Buying a camper is a big commitment. There are many things to consider first (including, perhaps, talking with your financial advisor about the decision). But it could be just what your family needs to spend quality time together.

Set Your OOO: Gone Camping

Camping offers a versatile, affordable, and memorable way to spend your summer, whether with family, friends, or on your own. As a financial advisor with a young child, camping is one of our family’s favorite activities. My wife and I feel less worried about long plane trips with a kiddo, and I especially appreciate using our much-loved gear summer after summer.

Camping is an activity I recommend to just about everyone, especially for my clients with little ones. As many sites can be outside of cell service, my final tip is to drop your financial advisor a note that you might be unreachable for a few days, just in case.
