When Martin Lundgren decided to launch Northern Lights Advisors, he wanted to build a financial advisory experience that was completely different from the norm.
Martin saw an opportunity to create a financial firm that would nurture employees and offer clients more than a once-a-year check-in. He also knew that by focusing on the convergence of his knowledge of the tech industry and wealth strategies, he could provide employees in Seattle’s digital economy a more comprehensive, higher-touch financial advisory option.
To dive deeper, Martin shared why creating a firm reflective of his values was so important. Here’s what he said:
You’ve said Northern Lights Advisors exists to provide a wealth management experience that frees clients up to live better lives. What led you to build a firm around that philosophy?
I saw an industry that often overcomplicates financial planning and prioritizes sales over substance. I knew it didn’t have to be that way. Northern Lights Advisors exists to provide wealth management to people who understand that when they partner with us, their financial health is in good hands. And, they get immense time back, which, for many, is priceless.
My thinking is that people deserve thoughtful, educated professionals helping them maximize the utility of their wealth — not a sales pitch or an upsell. Our goal is to provide clarity by examining and utilizing the whole picture. When we take structuring our clients’ finances properly off their hands, they can focus on the more enjoyable parts of life without spending emotional energy worrying about money.
Your team has an interesting variety of backgrounds. Why has it been a priority to hire folks with dynamic or non-traditional finance experiences?
You strengthen culture by pairing advisors with deep financial industry tenure and teammates who have diverse backgrounds from the traditional wealth management resume. When you consider Northern Lights Advisors, our different life and professional experiences help us think about things from every angle and relate to our clients on a deeper level — as opposed to “it’s always been done this way.”
“Do the right thing” and “good intentions” are central to your values. What does that actually mean inside the firm?
Doing the right thing means doing all the work with the right intentions and never cutting corners. We operate without fluff or facade, and no task is beneath anyone, whether it involves client service or supporting a colleague. I also want to prioritize curiosity and growth; the team should always be open to learning (or teaching). I expect everyone on the team to act with integrity, support one another, and prioritize the collective outcome over individual recognition.
You talk about challenging the conventional. What industry norms did you intentionally choose to avoid?
I intentionally avoided building a sales-driven culture. My team is not compensated based on sales quotas or product placement, because that structure can distort decision-making. Instead, we focus on continuous education, client outcomes, and long-term relationships.
For example, while Northern Lights Advisors primarily serves high-earning tech industry employees and the ultra-wealthy, every client has unique needs. We take the time to ensure their financial health is our number one priority. If the firm was sales-driven, the focus would be to get more and more people in the door, as opposed to making sure existing clients’ needs are met. My approach contrasts with much of the industry, where production metrics and efficiency are often prioritized over thoughtful, individualized advice.
I trust that growth will follow when clients are genuinely cared for, and employees have the financial and time flexibility to perform at a high level.
Your mission emphasizes minimizing worry and enabling people to focus on life. What do clients gain emotionally by working with you?
Clients gain confidence and peace of mind because they know their financial health is being handled by people who are serious, analytical, and genuinely invested in their success. We dig deeper than most in developing solutions, and that thoroughness reduces uncertainty. We’re also not afraid to do the actual execution — we’ll make sure your taxes are paid, or critical deadlines aren’t missed.
When clients trust that their savings, investments, and long-term plans are aligned, they can redirect their attention toward family, work, health, and experiences that matter most. They get their time back! The emotional benefit is the ability to live fully without finances dominating mental space.
Looking toward 2030 and beyond, what does wild success look like for Northern Lights Advisors?
Wild success means building a firm where clients thrive, employees are well compensated and supported, and the culture reflects our stated values. I’d love to grow from approximately $300 million in managed assets to $1 billion within five years and $2 billion within ten, while creating meaningful value for clients and team members alike.
One thing to keep in mind is the above metric of success means nothing without maintaining flexible work policies, preventing burnout, and ensuring that both clients and team members feel cared for and respected. I’m confident that if we consistently act with good intentions and serve people well, financial growth and long-term sustainability will follow.
