Updated 9/15/25 | Do you need tips for staying active through fall and winter? It’s just about that time again. The summer sun is starting to wane. Seattle’s familiar overcast skies promise to return. It’s easy to let the momentum you’ve built over the warmer months slip away. But just because the seasons change doesn’t mean you have to lose your drive.

For tech employees juggling demanding careers and family responsibilities, staying active and connected throughout the year is vital to maintaining mental clarity, emotional well-being, and even financial stability.

Here’s how to carry that summer energy forward and make the most of the year ahead.

Prioritize Exercise — Do Whatever Works Best for You

When summer rolls around, it’s natural to spend more time outdoors (like camping!). But as fall approaches, the challenge becomes keeping up that activity level when the weather isn’t as inviting. The key is to prioritize exercise in the best way for you.

If you love road biking during the summer, consider joining a spin class during the wetter months. Seattle has a variety of indoor cycling studios where you can keep your legs moving even when it’s raining — think about trying ClassPass to find the one that works best for you. For runners, explore the many covered or treaded options that can keep you moving despite the elements.

As a father, I know how challenging it can be to find the time for exercise. My best tip to stay active is to consider non-traditional times to work out. I love squeezing in a run between meetings or going for a swim in the early morning before my daughter gets up. Even if I can just get 30 minutes of movement on most days, I feel better for it.

Remember, exercise isn’t just about staying in shape — it’s a powerful tool for managing stress and maintaining mental health. Many of our clients are tech executives, and they likely face daily pressures that can weigh on their well-being. Regular physical activity helps to clear your mind, reduce anxiety, and improve focus. This all makes it easier to manage both personal and professional challenges.

Set a Goal: Sign Up for a Fall Event

Nothing keeps you motivated like having a goal on the horizon. Seattle offers numerous events throughout the year, many designed to accommodate varying levels of experience. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just starting, there’s something for everyone. Plus, these events often have a strong community aspect, allowing you to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for fitness.

Consider signing up for an organized event like a marathon, triathlon, or charity bike ride in late fall. This guide has many race options throughout the Puget Sound region. Knowing that an event is coming up will keep you committed to your training regimen, even when the weather is less than ideal.

Invest in Rain Gear

Living in Seattle, you’re no stranger to rain. Pro tip to stay active: Instead of letting it deter you from staying active, embrace it with the right gear. Investing in quality rain gear — like a waterproof jacket, pants, and shoes — can make all the difference. Brands like Arc’teryx and Patagonia offer high-performance options that are both functional and stylish. Here’s a good list of some of the best options.

When equipped to handle the elements, you’ll be more likely to maintain your outdoor activities, whether a morning run or a weekend hike with the family. Plus, getting outside, even in the rain, can be invigorating and help break up the monotony of indoor life.

Maintain Your Relationships

You’ve heard of the Seattle Freeze. Here, winters can be tough — not just because of the weather (the shorter days and lack of sunlight can lead to feelings of isolation) — but because making new friends is hard. It’s during these times that maintaining your existing relationships becomes even more important.

Make an effort to stay connected with friends and family. Plan regular get-togethers, whether a casual dinner at home, a movie night, or a weekend outing. Your social circle provides warmth and light during the darker months, offering emotional support and a sense of community essential for overall well-being.

For our tech employee clients, it’s easy to get caught up in work and let relationships slide. However, the effort you put into maintaining them will pay off in more ways than one. Strong personal connections can provide a much-needed counterbalance to the stresses of your professional life, helping you to stay grounded and focused.

Don’t forget about financial wellness

Our final tip to stay active? As the year winds down, it’s an ideal time to check in on your financial goals and planning. Just as you’ve worked hard to maintain your physical and mental health, it’s essential to ensure that your financial health is on track, too.

Review your progress towards your savings and investment goals, assess any changes in your income or expenses, and consider any adjustments that may be necessary as you move into the following year.
